I recently visited Japan for 3 incredible weeks in November. One of my favorite experiences was taking a day trip from Tokyo to the lovely mountain town of Nikko. Located about 150 km north of Tokyo in Tochigi Prefecture, Nikko makes for a rejuvenating escape from the bustling capital into nature.

The journey from Tokyo to Nikko takes around 2-3 hours each way.

Nikko Japan Day trip from Tokyo: by Tobu Train from Asakusa Station

• Take the Tobu Nikko Line rapid or limited express train. The limited express upgrade fee is worthwhile to save time. Total travel time is around 2 hours.

Day Trip To Nikko Japan by: JR Train from Tokyo/Ueno Station:

• Take the Tohoku Shinkansen bullet train to Utsunomiya, then transfer to the JR Nikko Line local train to Nikko Station. Total travel time is around 1 hour 40 minutes.

Day trip Tokyo to Nikko by: Bus from Tokyo Station

•  Takes over 3 hours so not ideal for a day trip.

The Perfect Nikko 1 Day Itinerary

Here is a detailed step-by-step one day itinerary for visiting Nikko’s top sights:

8:00am – Depart Tokyo Take the earliest possible Tobu limited express train to Nikko. The train journey takes around 2 hours one-way.

10:00am – Arrive in Nikko Pick up a local area map at the Tobu Nikko Station tourist information desk. Purchase a bus pass if desired, otherwise have small bills ready for individual bus fares.

10:30am – Shinkyo Bridge Take the bus from Tobu Nikko Station towards Shinkyo Bridge and get off at the Shinkyo stop. Capture photos of this iconic red bridge with the river and fall foliage backdrop. Walk across the bridge to cross it off your bucket list and make a wish.

11:15am – Toshogu Shrine After visiting Shinkyo Bridge, take the bus onwards a few stops to the entrance of Toshogu Shrine. Spend at least 1.5 – 2 hours wandering through the beautifully decorated main shrine buildings, long rows of mossy stone lanterns, and adjacent areas like the Five Storied Pagoda. Don’t forget to find the famous sleeping cat and sparrows carvings!

1:30pm – Lunch Break Take the bus up to the Futaarasan Shrine Mae stop. Have lunch at the lovely riverside Nikko Coffee shop or one of the other nearby cafes and restaurants while taking in nice views.

2:30pm – Futarasan Shrine After lunch, visit the sacred Futarasan Shrine just a couple minute walk up the street. Explore the vibrant red shrine buildings set against towering cedar trees which create a magical atmosphere.

3:00pm – Kanmangafuchi Abyss After Futarasan Shrine, slowly stroll down the street to Kanmangafuchi Abyss gorge overlooking the Daiya River. Search for the dozens of stone Buddhist Jizo statues dressed in adorable hats and bibs as you admire the unique rock cliff formations along the way.

4:00pm – Rinnoji Temple From Kanmangafuchi Abyss, amble over to the nearby Rinnoji Temple, Nikko’s most historic Buddhist place of worship. Check out the massive gold Tachi statues and the perfectly manicured Japanese gardens.

5:00pm – Depart Nikko Tour complete! Casually walk back downhill through town to Tobu Nikko Station. Hop on the limited express train back to Tokyo, arriving around 7-8pm.

I certainly would have loved to spend more time enjoying Nikko’s abundance of shrines, temples, hot springs, waterfalls, hiking trails, and scenic Lake Chuzenji. However, this full day itinerary efficiently covers the must-see highlights.

Getting Around: Nikko from tokyo day trip 

The main World Heritage Area sights are located an easy uphill walk of about 30 minutes from Tobu Nikko Station. There are also frequent buses running to the central tourist sites. Those with activity limitations can take advantage of the regular bus connections.

I opted to take buses between the first few stops on my itinerary before continuing the rest of the day on foot at my own pace. The bus rides gave me an overview orientation of the layout. Then I could wander leisurely without having to double back.

You can purchase bus passes for unlimited travel at Tobu Nikko Station or the tourist information center. However, paying single fares as needed also won’t add up to too high a cost.
