Nestled high up in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, Lake Tahoe straddles the border between California and Nevada. About 100 miles east of Sacramento and a similar distance southwest of Reno, it’s located in a high alpine valley surrounded by pine-forested peaks.

At over 6,200 feet elevation, it is one of the highest large lakes in the United States. The towering granite cliff faces and clear blue waters have earned it the nickname “Gem of the Sierra.”

Several alpine lakes and streams feed Lake Tahoe’s waters, which gather behind a natural dam created by the lake’s unique geologic history of faulting and volcanic activity over two million years ago

It’s a popular weekend getaway destination thanks to its stunning scenery, endless outdoor activities, and fun nightlife.

As someone who lives 2 hours away from Tahoe, I frequently visit. It’s one of the prettiest lakes and cities in Northern California.
