The short answer

Where to stay in Lake Tahoe? Edgewood Tahoe for the lakefront and a MICHELIN One Key, and the Ritz-Carlton at Northstar for skiing, with The Landing as my lakeshore runner-up for a smaller room. Pick your shore first and the hotel nearly picks itself.

Granite boulders in the clear turquoise water at Sand Harbor, Lake Tahoe

You can see the bottom at twenty feet, and it fools everyone

Choose the shore before the hotel, and book it early for summer and the winter holidays.

Tahoe is one of those places where the hotel you choose decides your whole trip, because the lake is twenty-two miles around and the two shores feel like different holidays. North and east is water, quiet and Truckee. South is Stateline’s casinos, Heavenly and Emerald Bay. So I always ask which shore first, and then I narrow it down. Truthfully, Tahoe has only a couple of true luxury addresses, and these are the ones I put my clients in; I’m describing the hotels as an advisor here, not telling you about nights I slept in them. For the lake itself, my Lake Tahoe Rolodex has everything else.

Twenty-two miles of this

Edgewood Tahoe · Stateline · from $700 a night

This is the one at the top, and it holds a MICHELIN One Key, which is the kind of detail I love to be able to tell a client. It’s a 154-room resort lakefront on the Nevada side, with the only lakefront golf course at Tahoe, an 8,500 square foot spa and three restaurants: The Edge for the serious dinner, The Bistro on the water in season, and Brooks’ Bar and Deck for everything else. A heads-up: an events expansion is under construction until January 2027, so ask for a lake-view room away from the building work. And that MICHELIN badge is a hotel Key, not a restaurant star, so don’t go expecting one.

The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe · Northstar · from $700 a night

Ski-in, ski-out above Truckee, with a 17,000 square foot spa and seventeen treatment rooms, a newly renovated Manzanita and a new Mexican room, Montesa. There’s a valet charge and a separate resort fee on top of the room, so ask the hotel for today’s figures before you compare it with anything else. Book it for the snow, and you’ll love walking from the lift to a warm room.

A lakefront runner-up: The Landing Resort and Spa · South Lake Tahoe

I’ll be straight with you: The Landing sits a step below my usual price band, so I don’t list it as a headline pick. But it’s a small, recently renovated lakeshore resort with a rooftop deck and a heated outdoor pool, and for me it’s the best actual lakefront room on the California side. It feels far more intimate than Edgewood, and if the lake outside your window is the whole point, it earns a place on this list.

Rates move with the season and the snow, so I ask the hotels for current figures for your dates rather than quote you a number that’s already out of date. My clients typically enjoy daily breakfast, a hotel credit and an upgrade whenever one is available, wherever they apply.

One to skip when you search

Chalet View Lodge keeps appearing in Tahoe searches and it’s lovely, but it’s fifty-one miles north of Truckee near Graeagle. It isn’t a Tahoe hotel.

The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe isn’t on the lake

Here’s the tip I give everyone: don’t let the name fool you. It’s ski-in, ski-out at Northstar, about ten minutes above the water. Wonderful for a ski trip, the wrong choice if you wanted to walk to the shore.

Asked often

Should I stay on the north or south shore of Lake Tahoe?

North and east for the water and the quiet, south for the nightlife, Heavenly and Emerald Bay. Edgewood sits on the south-east corner, so you get a bit of both.

What is the best hotel on Lake Tahoe?

Edgewood Tahoe, which holds a MICHELIN One Key. The Landing is my pick for a lakefront room on the California side if you want something smaller.

Where should I stay in Lake Tahoe for skiing?

The Ritz-Carlton at Northstar for ski-in, ski-out, which is ten minutes above the water.

Where should I stay in Lake Tahoe for the lake views?

Edgewood and The Landing are the two I send people to.

How many nights should I stay in Lake Tahoe?

Two or three on one shore.

Is there a hotel on the lake in Truckee?

No, Truckee is fifteen minutes from the north shore. For the lake itself, look to Edgewood or The Landing, and see my Lake Tahoe Primer for what to book before you go.

Tell me your dates and which shore you’re dreaming of and I’ll tell you where I’d put you, and I’ll place you so you get my perks wherever they apply.
