The short answer
At a glance

You can see the bottom at twenty feet, and it fools everyone
Tahoe is the most beautiful lake in America and it has spent the last three years quietly changing how you are allowed to visit it. Not dramatically, not unreasonably – twenty-two miles of shoreline were never going to absorb the numbers that started arriving in 2020 – but comprehensively, and in ways that will ruin a day if nobody has told you.
The short version: Sand Harbor now requires a parking reservation booked online in advance, and you must be through the gate by half past ten. The roadside parking on Highway 89 at Emerald Bay has been removed, the fine for trying it went from forty dollars to a hundred, and the California Highway Patrol wrote three hundred and seventy-nine tickets in one summer. Both places now have shuttles, one free and one five dollars. Almost every Tahoe article online predates all of this.
Get the logistics right and the lake is exactly as good as it has always been – water you can see the bottom of at twenty feet, granite boulders you can swim between, pines straight down to the shore, and in winter some of the best skiing on the continent an hour from an international airport.
