THE TRIP

Visited

I travelled alone in Mexico City for seven days in June 2024, according to my own Mexico City pieces. Entry, money and number details were checked against general sources on 28 October 2026, so confirm the latest with the Mexican immigration authority before you fly.

The short answer

Mexico City is easy to enter and easy to fall for: US citizens don’t need a visa for a tourist stay, pesos are the currency, the city sits at about 2,250 metres so day one should be gentle, and the tap water isn’t for drinking. I’d take it one neighbourhood a day, book Casa Azul tickets online and keep a driver for late nights.

At a glance

Visa
No visa for US citizens for a tourist stay; a valid passport and the tourist permit given on arrival
Money
Pesos; cards widely, cash for markets and small tips
Best months
November to April for dry days; May to October for green and quiet
Getting around
A private driver for longer hops and late evenings, and your own feet in the neighbourhood of the day
Safety note
Comfortable in Roma, Condesa, Polanco and Coyoacán with usual big-city care; keep a driver for late nights

The Metropolitan Cathedral behind agave and cacti in the Zócalo, Mexico City

The cathedral on the Zócalo, day one.

Easy to enter and easy to love: the entry rules, the altitude, the water and the few small habits that make a first week feel like yours.

Mexico City is one of the great eating cities in the world, and it’s happiest taken one neighbourhood a day: the Centro Histórico, Roma and Condesa, Chapultepec and Polanco, and Coyoacán. I travelled alone here for seven days in June 2024 and honestly could have happily stayed longer. This Dossier is the practical layer, and the places and tables live in my Mexico City Rolodex, The Route: Three Days in Mexico City and where I eat.
