The short answer

Where to stay in Bora Bora? Le Bora Bora by Pearl Resorts, where I stayed, is the one I recommend most: an Otemanu-facing overwater bungalow on Motu Tevairoa. The Four Seasons and St Regis are the polished and the grand. Several famous hotels have closed or changed since 2024, so check before you book.

Overwater bungalows on Motu Tevairoa, Bora Bora

Overwater bungalows on Motu Tevairoa with Mount Otemanu behind them.

Choose the motu by the mountain view you want, then check with me that the hotel you’ve found still exists, because Bora Bora has changed more in two years than in the previous twenty.

Before you book anything, let me save you a mistake. The Sofitel Bora Bora Private Island has closed, and Accor’s own page now labels it as currently closed. The old Le Méridien reopened in 2024 as The Westin Bora Bora Resort & Spa. The InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa shut on 1 June 2026, and IHG says it will come back as a Regent in late 2027. The listing sites haven’t caught up, and people are still being sold nights at hotels that aren’t taking guests, so please ask me before you fall for a photo.

The happy news is that what’s left is a tighter, better field, and French Polynesia now has its own MICHELIN Key list to measure it by. I spent my honeymoon at Le Bora Bora in March 2022, and the lagoon really is that colour, an absurd, graduated turquoise that changes about six times between your deck and the reef, with Mount Otemanu standing in the middle of it like stage scenery. Four nights is the right length, and I’d happily make it five if you add Moorea or Taha’a on the way through. My Bora Bora Rolodex has the lagoon tour, the pearls and everything else.

Le Bora Bora by Pearl Resorts · Motu Tevairoa · my first call

This is where I stayed, six nights in Otemanu bungalow 305, and it’s the one I recommend most. It sits on Motu Tevairoa, about ten minutes by boat from the airport dock, with around a hundred and eight villas, roughly three-quarters of them overwater, and the resort’s own site reports two MICHELIN Keys. It’s the best value at the top of this market, and the Otemanu-facing bungalows look straight at the mountain, which is exactly the view you flew all this way for. The sandbar was waist-deep on me for hundreds of feet. Dinner is the weak link, so I’d eat well at breakfast and plan one great dinner elsewhere. I’ve written the full Verdict on Le Bora Bora.

Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora · Motu Tehotu · the polished one

The most polished operation on the island, and the one I’d book for people who want nothing at all to go wrong. The protected inner lagoon is wonderful for snorkelling right off your own deck, and the resort is listed with two MICHELIN Keys by the destination specialists I trust. I haven’t stayed, so I’m describing it as an advisor.

The St Regis Bora Bora · Motu Ome’e · for the anniversary

Large overwater villas, butler service and the kind of finish that makes a milestone feel like one, and it’s also listed with two MICHELIN Keys by the same sources. It’s the most expensive room on the island by some distance, so for a once-in-a-lifetime anniversary, it’s the room. I haven’t stayed here either.

Conrad Bora Bora Nui · Motu To’opua · newly back

It reopened on 1 May 2026 after a month-long renovation, and island observers report larger overwater bungalows with sunset-facing orientations among the changes, though the resort hasn’t published the full list, so ask me what exactly is new for your dates. The hilltop spa is the other reason I’d put someone here.

The Westin Bora Bora Resort & Spa · Motu Tape · the former Méridien

Marriott reopened the old Le Méridien as The Westin after a full renovation, with most of its villas overwater and many with plunge pools. It’s the resort I’d look at when a family or a group needs space and a gentler price, and I’d check the current room count and rate with you.

InterContinental Le Moana · Matira Point · the quiet one

A genuinely different idea, because it’s on the main island beside the best public beach in French Polynesia. You can walk to restaurants and shops, which on a motu you simply can’t, and it has the lowest entry price of the group. It’s a separate hotel from the InterContinental Thalasso that has closed.

The Brando · Tetiaroa

If you have seven nights rather than four, I’d split them. The Brando holds three MICHELIN Keys, retained in the 2026 selection and the top distinction in the guide, with about thirty-five villas, a research station on the atoll and a short private flight from Papeete. For the right trip it’s the splurge that beats anything on Bora Bora itself, and Le Taha’a by Pearl Resorts, which announced two Keys in 2025, is the other one I’d stitch on.

Here’s what I tell my clients: on Bora Bora you will eat at your resort, so plan and budget for a meal plan from the start, because it’s usually the sensible move rather than an upsell. Drinks and extras are expensive even by resort standards, and it’s the most common complaint across every property on the island, so go in knowing it and it won’t spoil a thing. My clients typically enjoy preferred-partner perks at these resorts wherever they apply.

Asked often

How many nights do I need in Bora Bora?

Four. Three is too short once you allow for the flights, and after five most people are ready for a change of scene, which is what Taha’a, Moorea or Tetiaroa are for.

Which Bora Bora resort has the best view of Mount Otemanu?

The Otemanu-category overwater bungalows at Le Bora Bora by Pearl Resorts, the Four Seasons, and the Conrad. The InterContinental Thalasso held that title and has closed for its Regent conversion.

Is Le Méridien Bora Bora still open?

It has become The Westin Bora Bora Resort & Spa after a renovation and reopening in 2024.

Is the Sofitel Bora Bora still open?

No. Accor’s own page lists the Sofitel Bora Bora Private Island as currently closed.

What is the best time to visit Bora Bora?

May to October is the dry season, with lower humidity and the clearest water. Late April to early June and October are my favourite weeks.

Should I stay on a motu or the main island?

A motu for the overwater bungalow and the mountain view, with a boat transfer from the airport. Matira Point on the main island suits you if you’d rather walk to restaurants and a beautiful public beach.

Is an overwater bungalow worth the money?

If the lagoon and the bungalow are the point of the trip, absolutely. If you want variety, food or culture, you’ll be happier splitting the week across two or three islands, and I’d happily build it that way.

Tell me when you’re thinking of going and I’ll find you the right motu and the right category facing the mountain. Inquire about a private trip to Bora Bora
