The short answer

The Amalfi Coast is a place where planning decides everything: arrive by boat or with a driver, never a hire car, stay in one town, and travel between late April and May or mid-September and October, because most hotels shut at the end of October. The SS163 plate rules, the Amalfi permit reset on 1 January 2026 and the ferry timetables are the three things to sort first.

At a glance

Visa
Schengen rules; EES biometric registration since 10 April 2026
Money
Euros; cards widely; a small overnight tourist tax at hotels
Best months
Late April to May and mid-September into October
Getting around
By boat and ferry, with a driver on the road; never a hire car
Safety note
Safe; the risks are steps, scooters and the SS163 permit rules

Positano and the tiled dome as the light goes.

Everything to sort before you fly to the Amalfi Coast: the season’s hard edges, the road and ferry rules, what it costs, and the small things that decide whether a day works.

The Amalfi Coast at a glance

Fifty kilometres of cliff with towns poured into the gaps, and the place where good planning makes the biggest difference of anywhere I work. The season has hard edges, the road is narrow and increasingly regulated, and the best way in is by sea. This page is the practical layer beneath The Rolodex: The Amalfi Coast.
