The short answer

Italy is twenty-odd regions sharing a passport, so you can’t see it all, but you can see a piece of it beautifully. This is my Rolodex of where I send people: the north for lakes and mountains, the centre for the Italy you’re picturing, and the south for coast and food. Pick three bases and save the rest for next time.

At a glance

Base in
Three bases for ten nights: Rome, a Tuscan or lakeside base, and the coast
Stay
Caruso, A Belmond Hotel, in Ravello for the Amalfi Coast
Book ahead
Hotels six to nine months out for May, June, September and October; restaurant tables months out
Don’t miss
The Vatican at opening with a private guide, and one slow morning with nothing planned
Stayed
Italy, May 2025, including Caruso, A Belmond Hotel, in Ravello

Looking out over Positano on the Amalfi Coast, Italy

Positano from the wall, with the whole town stacked up the hill behind.

If you’ve read my Primer, you already know my favourite thing about Italy: it isn’t one country, it’s twenty-odd regions that happen to share a passport. So think of this page as my Rolodex, the one I reach for when someone says, “We have ten days, where do we go?”

Below you’ll find the places I send people, grouped the way I’d actually plan them: the north for lakes, mountains and Venice, the centre for the Italy you’ve been picturing, and the south for the coast and the food. For each one I’ve linked to the page where I go properly deep, so you can wander as far down the rabbit hole as you like.

And remember the golden rule from my Primer: three bases, not four. Pick the pieces that make your mouth water and leave the rest for next time.

You’ve reached the quiet door.
