The Turtle Tower on Hoan Kiem Lake seen through branches, Hanoi

Hanoi does not hand itself over. It is a thousand years old, it is still a working city rather than a preserved one, and the best of it happens on pavements at hours most visitors sleep through. Give it three days and walk them.

What follows is what I would actually do, in the order I would do it, with the things I would quietly skip. One piece of housekeeping first: Vietnam abolished its district tier in July 2025, so every address that says Hoan Kiem District is now out of date. Street name and number are the reliable part.

You’ve reached the quiet door.
