The museum and the tower, from the far bank
Two nights in Bilbao, built around the two museums and the one walk that explains the whole city.
Destination overview
A working river city of about three hundred and fifty thousand on the Nervión, fifteen minutes from the Basque Country’s main airport. The Casco Viejo sits on one bank, the Guggenheim and the new town on the other, and the river path between them is twenty-five minutes on foot. San Sebastián is an hour and a quarter away by road, Vitoria about an hour.

Opening scene
It is seven in the evening and you are on the far bank, looking back at a building that still does not quite look like a building. The titanium has gone from silver to gold in the last twenty minutes and it will be pink before you leave. Behind you, people are walking home from work along the river. That is the thing about Bilbao that the photographs never carry: it is an ordinary city that happens to have this in the middle of it.
The ask
Nearly always a version of the same question: is Bilbao worth more than a day, or should we just see the Guggenheim on the way to San Sebastián? It is worth two nights, and this route is the argument. One day for the museums, one for the old town and the river, and two evenings of a bar round that is cheaper and more local than Donostia’s.
