The short answer
At a glance

Vernazza, the only real harbour of the five.
Two nights on the Ligurian coast, built around a boat, one early walk and a base that isn’t in the five villages.
Destination overview
Cinque Terre is five villages pinned to a cliff face with no road between them, and behind them something close to seven thousand kilometres of dry-stone wall holding up terraces of vines. There is no luxury hotel in any of the five villages, so this route bases you at Portovenere, part of the same UNESCO listing, and brings you into the villages by boat and on foot. Pisa, Florence and Genoa are all two hours or less away by road.

Opening scene
It’s six in the evening and the day boats have all gone home. You’re coming into Vernazza from the sea, the way it was built to be seen, with the pastel houses stacked up around the harbour and the light going gold on the water. You swam in a cove at noon that nobody can walk to, you ate lunch on board, and now the village is almost yours. That, and not the five-villages-in-a-day march, is the Cinque Terre I’d have you come for.
The ask
The question I hear most is whether three days is enough, and how to do it without queuing for trains and trails. It’s enough if you stay somewhere calm nearby, use a boat for the water and walk only when it’s cool and empty. This route is that trip.
