THE TRIP

Visited

Travelled in Japan repeatedly, most recently October 2024

The short answer

Everything practical, in one place and current to October 2026. The card shortage is over and you can buy an ordinary Suica again. Mobile Suica is iPhone-only until Samsung arrives in 2027. The JR Pass went to 53,000 yen and for most trips no longer pays. And the departure tax rose to 3,000 yen in July.

At a glance

Money
Cards are accepted almost everywhere now, but carry 10,000 to 20,000 yen in cash – shrines, markets and small counters are still cash only
Getting around
An IC card for everything local, individual shinkansen tickets rather than the rail pass, and send your luggage ahead
Tipping
None, anywhere, ever. Leaving money on a table causes real confusion.
Entry
Visa-free 90 days for US, UK and EU passports. Do Visit Japan Web before you fly and screenshot the QR codes.

Everything works. The manual is just not included.

The practical layer of a Japan trip – money, trains, IC cards, etiquette and connectivity, current to October 2026.

Japan is the easiest difficult country in the world to travel in. Everything works, everything is clean, everything runs on time, and almost nobody will be rude to you – and yet the first forty-eight hours can feel like being handed a beautifully made machine with no manual. The friction is never about danger or discomfort. It is about small systems you have not been taught: which card to tap, which queue to stand in, which side of the escalator, whether you can eat this standing up.

This page is the manual. It is the practical layer that sits underneath every other Japan piece on this site, and I keep it current rather than rewriting it into each guide. Everything here was checked in October 2026, and a lot of it has changed in the last eighteen months.
