THE TRIP

Visited

Travelled to New York, most recently October 2023

The short answer

Four days in New York, arranged by neighbourhood so you walk more than you ride: downtown and the Brooklyn Bridge, the Frick and Central Park, the High Line and the West Village, and a slow last day on the water. Two museums, not five, one serious dinner and the rest unplanned, because the city fills the gaps better than you will.

At a glance

Setting
Four days in New York, usually a first visit, arranged by neighbourhood
Best for
First-timers who want it distilled, with a long list cut to what works
Standout
Dumbo and the Brooklyn Bridge at seven in the morning, before the crowds
Consider
Congestion pricing below 60th Street, and the Met is closed on Wednesdays
Stayed
New York, October 2023

On the Brooklyn Bridge, which is best walked early and from the Brooklyn side.

The opening scene

Picture Washington Street in Dumbo at seven in the morning. The cobbles are empty, the light comes down the street low and gold, and the Manhattan Bridge sits framed between two old warehouses at the end of it, exactly the way it does in every photograph, only without the crowd. By nine you’ll be sharing it with a hundred people. For the first hour it’s yours, and that hour is how the whole route is built.

The ask

Four days in New York, usually a first visit, and the brief I get is always the same: a list of eleven things, two hours a day in traffic, and a fear of seeing the inside of a lot of queues. Good news. Pick a neighbourhood a day, walk between things, front-load every morning and leave half of every day unplanned, and four days is a far better trip than the list.
